What are the Benefits of Overnight Pet Care

What are the Benefits of Overnight Pet Care?

Author, Noelle Dunn, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Finding the perfect place for your pet’s care when you have to go out of town is a very stressful thing for many pet owners. Quite often people postpone trips and time away from home for the sheer fact they don’t want their pet to suffer or be uncomfortable. These days your options are unlimited, when it comes to pet care. While there are many options there is one that can’t be beat. In home, overnight pet care is the best. Here are a few of the reasons why you need to consider overnight pet sitting as an alternative to other care services such as kennels or group boarding facilities.

– Routines won’t change. Most pets love their routine. It’s comfortable and a known. Mealtime, playtime and walks. Hugs and love to boot. Sticking to these schedules makes your pet feel comfortable. Your being away from them is stressor enough. Deviate from a routine and it can stress your pet even more.

– Home Sweet Home. Your pet would much prefer being home in their environment. Sights, sounds and smells of home keep the pets feeling secure. Your pet can sleep in their own bed, play with their own toys and pitter patter around without the nuisance of being locked up in a room full of cages with other animals. Taking your pet elsewhere for care while you’re away can further stress them which can lead to stress related illnesses.

– Security – For your pet as well as your home. Seeking out home care for your pet is an excellent security system. Keep your home and your pet safe with someone staying there over night, someone will to turn on lights, make a presence known and keep your pooch company. It keeps your pet safe from danger and prevents possible vandalism and break-ins while you’re away because your home doesn’t look vacant.  Not only that, if a pipe bursts or some other at home problem occurs, your pet sitter can notify someone of the matter, possibly saving you thousands of dollars.

– Illness. As mentioned earlier being separated from your pet can stress them out. Stress can lead to illness. Additionally taking your pet to stay at a daycare/kennel, where many other dogs are and their stress levels rise, they can catch colds or illnesses spread by other dogs. Diseases can be spread in kennel environments. It’s not worth the risk.

Avoid the stress for you and your pet, and Leave knowing your pet will be home, safe and sound. Look for a Professional Pet Care Provider. Research a few businesses before you make a decision. Check out their website, make sure the owner’s history is on there, read articles, look for experience and expertise.  Read our other articles on what to look for in a pet sitter to help keep you and your pets safe.

Happy pet owning !!

Pet Tips For Christmas December

.

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Some easy to make cat toys for Christmas –

  • Cut holes in a plastic water bottle so that kibble is dispensed when the cat rolls the bottle around. Use sand paper to smooth any sharp edges and rinse well then dry before using.
  • Tie fabric strips to a long stick and run it across the floor. Be careful to not let kitties eat any loose strings
  • Take an old sock and put catnip and a few pieces of crumpled cellophane inside. Knot it up for your cat to wrestle with or carry around.
  • For the prey minded cats who love to chase, toss aluminum (not used on any food) foil balls down stairs or along your floor. A crumpled piece of paper will work, too!

Some easy to make dog toys for Christmas –

  • Wrap a water bottle in a t-shirt, becomes a crinkle chew toy
  • Another crinkle toy, take a water bottle and put in a sock
  • For a tennis ball treat puzzle, cut a hole in a tennis ball big enough for kibble or small treats, insert inside and as the ball rolls around the food will fall out
  • Braided Tug Toy – take Old t-shirts cut into strips can be braided tightly, knot each end
  • Here are more ideas – http://www.pinterest.com/brumzoo/diy-pet-toys/

Pet Tip #1 –

Securely anchor the tree to the wall with fishing line, to prevent playful curious pets from tipping or knocking it over

Pet Tip #2 –

Skip the tinsel,  Kitties can not resist the sparkly fun toy but if ingested could lead to obstruction, vomiting, surgery & can be fatal.

Pet Tip #3 –

Keep pets away from wrapping paper, string & ribbons.  They could pose health hazards, blockage and more

Pet Tip #4 –

Christmas tree water is not for pets to drink.  It may contain chemicals, flame retardants and insecticides leaking from the treated trees.

Pet Tip #5 –

Clean up tree needles.  They can be toxic and cause mouth and stomach irritation.

Pet Tip #6 –

Angel hair, flocking and artificial snow are mildly toxic, large amounts will cause blockages

Pet Tip #7 –

Tree preservatives for the water are often sugar based and inviting to pets, another reason to keep pets away

Pet Tip #8 –

To keep pets away from the tree, try using citrus sprays.  Most pets do not like the smell.

Pet Tip #9 –

Keep wires taped securely and away from pets.  No dangling wires enticing them to be chewed, causing burns or worse.

Pet Tip #10 –

Keep breakable ornaments out of reach from playful paws.  Glass fragments and metal hangers can be a choking hazard and more

Pet Tip #11 –

Holiday potpourri can smell delicious to pets but may cause them to become very ill or worse

Pet Tip #12 –

Some snow globes contain antifreeze which is sweet tasting to pets.  If knocked over and broken, pets may be attracted to ingesting which can be fatal

 Medications

As always keep medications out of pets reach.  Give them a place to go from all the noise and bustle of the holidays.

Make Reservations Early

Make your reservation Now for your January pet care reservation.  Book all pet care reservations as early as you possibly can to ensure you will be all set.

Keep Your Pet Cool!!

Author, Joelle Schuller, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Frozen Treats

“Frosty Paws”  Ice cream-like treat specifically made for your dog.  These cool treats can be found in your grocer’s freezer.   For dogs who like ice cubes, how about taking it up a notch?  Puree watermelon or any other fruits and veggies your dog likes and voila!!  Easy, breezy…cool treats!

Gel Cooling Pads

These mats come in all sizes so all dogs and cats can cool off!  No need to refrigerate these mats either.  These work to cool your pet off by lowering his body temperature.  Simply put, your dog or cat lays on the gel mat and he’ll be cooled off in no time as the gel mat draws heat away from your pal’s body!

Cooling Pet Cots and Canopies

These amazing cots are made from a breathable denier polyester and mesh material making air flow possible to keep your pet cool.  There’s even one that comes with a removable gel pad to cool your pet down even more!  If your pet loves to lay on the cool tile at home, this cot may be just what he needs.  This will keep your pet up off the ground, which is great if your pet spends time out of doors!  This easy to assemble cot also has a matching canopy which is also great for dogs that spend time outdoors and is a great addition to your camping gear!

FroBo Water Bowl

Keep your dog “hydrated and happy” with this amazing bowl.  No cords or electricity involved here.  This bowl features a freezable core that will keep your dog’s water cold for up to 8 hours.  Gone are the days of warm, stagnant water.  You can even purchase an additional freeze core so you always have a cold one on hand!

Crate Cooling Fan

Do you keep your dog in a cage or crate while you’re at work or out for the day.  This cool fan attaches right to the bars of your dog’s crate providing extra ventilation.  It’s quiet fan works on two speeds, and provides up to 100 hours of cooling, fresh air.  No electricity needed either so your pet will be safe!  Requires 2 D-cell batteries

Flea and Tick

Borne Diseases

You Need to Be Aware of!

Author, Joelle Schuller, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Do you protect your pet against fleas and ticks?  If not, read on to learn the dangers associated with flea and tick infestation!  Your pet should be some type of flea and tick prevention plan; it could save his life!

First, let’s start with some tips to keep your pet free of fleas and ticks!

  • Proper grooming is essential. Bathing and brushing your dog regularly will help keep infestation at bay.  Those pests don’t thrive in soap and water.
  • Keep an eye on your pet especially if he spends a lot of time out of doors. Check his fur each time he comes in.  A quick brush before he comes in the door is a great option.  The sooner you detect the pests, the less likely those pests are to multiply!
  • An unhealthy dog is more susceptible to being preyed upon by fleas and ticks. Keep your dog healthy with a proper diet and exercise regime, as well as regular  visits to the vet.
  • Keep your lawn and shrubs well maintained. Fleas and ticks love to hang around tall grass and wooded areas!
  • Wash linens and vacuum any carpets and upholstery that your pet has access too. Empty the vacuum directly after each use and take the debris to the outside trash bin so if there are any fleas or ticks, they are not left inside!
  • Talk to the vet about the best prevention plan for your pet. If you are against medicating your pet, discuss alternative/holistic methods with your vet.
