Does your dog snore? Snoring dogs can contribute to many sleepless nights for their pet parents. This can become quite troublesome for you especially if your dog sleeps in the bed with you. However, you just might want to figure out exactly why your dog is snoring as snoring may be as it could signal that something serious is going on.

So, what’s going on here?  Why is my dog snoring?

Breed.  There are certain breeds of dogs that are known to snore.  If your dog has a flat nose or face, chances are he snores.  Pugs, French bulldogs and Pekinese dogs snore pretty loud.  In fact, some dogs with flat faces need to get surgery because they struggle to get enough air in.  This condition is  called brachycephalic airway syndrome.  Surgery can eliminate the struggle to breathe as well as the snoring.  Of course, you will want to seriously discuss the pros and cons of any surgery on your dog as all surgeries come with risks.

Congestion.

Just like their human counterparts, dogs can get congested.  If your dog has a bit of a cold or he’s congested for any other reason, he’s mostly likely going to snore.  A quick trip to the vet may provide relief to your pet via the use of a decongestant or antibiotic.  Your canine companion should not have to suffer.

Environment

Think about the scents lurking around your home.  Any irritant of the lungs or airways may case your beloved dog to snore.  Anything from second-hand smoke, household cleansers, detergents, candles and even dust can make it difficult for your dog to breathe.  You may also want to consider the temperature of your dog’s environment.  A cool environment is the best and will keep your dog most comfortable.

Health Issues.

Dogs may also snore if they are overweight.  Excess weight will put pressure on your dog’s neck and lungs.  If your dog is overweight you should really address it with your vet right away and provide your dog with safe opportunities to exercise. Seasonal allergies can also make it difficult for your dog to breath.  Pollen is a big offender for all of us when it comes to seasonal allergies.  A more serious health issue may be at work here so is snoring and this is out of the ordinary for him, a quick visit to the vet is most certainly in order.

Finding the root cause of your dog’s snoring might just take a little guess and check.  However, if your dog has been a lifelong snorer, you just might be stuck with it forever.  If you are dead set against making him sleep in another room, we understand but then you might want to invest in a set of ear plugs.

Eczema and Dogs

Eczema

.

and

.

Your Dog

.

This article is brought to you by Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Does your dog have dry, flaky skin? If so, that’s a clear sign that he just might be suffering from Eczema.  While it’s fairly easy to treat Eczema and provide your dog with some relief, finding the root cause of Eczema is not quite so simple.  Why?  There are many causes for Eczema and ordinarily there is an underlying issue at hand that is manifesting itself as Eczema.

So, what exactly is Eczema?

Eczema is an inflammation of the outer layers of your dog’s skin. Simply put, Eczema is a symptom of an underlying cause.  Eczema can cause your dog to be really itchy which may prompt him to chew, scratch, lick and/or rub his skin.  This will often only serve to worsen the issue at hand so it’s important to get to work at finding the underlying issue.  Eczema can also be exacerbated by seasonal influences such as hot, dry or humid air.

Additional symptoms of Eczema

  • Dandruff
  • Bad odor on the skin
  • Scaly skin
  • Matted undercoat
  • Oozing
  • Crustiness
  • Change in skin pigmentations (usually darkened)
  • Pain
  • Red bumps
  • Blisters
  • Hot Spots
  • Itchiness
  • Hair Loss

What causes Eczema?

  • This is where things get tricky. There are so many causes of Eczema.  This makes diagnosis so hard as it’s often a trial and error of tests and treatments.
  • Systemic Illnesses
  • Insect Bites
  • External Parasites such as Fleas, Lice, Ticks, Mites
  • Poor/low quality Diet
  • Extreme Weather
  • Contact with or ingestion of irritants such as chemicals, dust, plants, pollen
  • Psychological Problems such as depression, anxiety, boredom or frustration

Treatment

Conventional Medicine is often the first line of defense against Eczema. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as steroids are often prescribed to suppress the symptoms associated with this condition.  Additionally, antibiotics are used to treat secondary infections.  These methods are great for short term treatment but do not address the underlying cause of Eczema. If the root cause of the Eczema is not sought out, the condition will only resurface more aggressively later on. Many pet parents are now using topical herbal and internal remedies to alleviate the symptoms of Eczema.  Burdock root, cleavers, Echinacea and licorice root are just a few of such herbs. These herbs serve to strengthen the overall immune system of your dog while providing relief to the symptoms of Eczema.

Remember, Eczema is a mere symptom of an underlying issue.  Please work closely with your veterinarian, holistic or otherwise, to determine the root cause of your dog’s symptoms.  It will take some patience and persistence but don’t give up.

 Until Tuesday

Did you know that the training of a service dog can begin as early as three days old?  That was the case for Tuesday the Psychiatric Therapy dog.  At three days old when his only developed sense was touch, his trainers began his interaction with humans.  Tuesday, the golden retriever, was born and bred to be of service to one very fortunate human being.

Tuesday was trained by a variety of handlers so that he would not get attached to any one human.  However, he did spend time working behind bars with a prison inmate under a special prisoner dog training program.  Tuesday was very sad when his trainer was paroled but the best was yet to come for Tuesday and a very special disabled Iraqi Veteran by the name of Luis Montalvan.

Luis Montalvan, who so boldly and courageously served our country for two tours in Iraq, came home a changed man.  He suffered debilitating physical and psychological injuries from war.  Luis retreated from his family, friends and life altogether. He suffered from PTSD, nightmares, traumatic brain injury, panic attacks and a fractured vertebrae.  Luis was in need of a therapy dog.

Tuesday spent the first two years of her life preparing to be of service to one person and that person was Luis Montalvan.  In 2008, Luis and Tuesday were matched and so began a journey of healing for Luis.  Tuesday is Luis’s constant companion and is in tune of his every need.  Tuesday can detect when Luis needs help, and when he is anxious or afraid.  He picks things up for him, helps him keep his balance when his vertigo attacks and so much more. The pair plays together and works together.  Luis wrote a book entitled “Until Tuesday” and Tuesday was right there with him while he wrote the book and while he was out promoting it.  In fact, Luis went on to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and Tuesday was right there with him earning his very own diploma and donning a cap and gown.

Luis is living the life he thought he had lost while serving our country thanks to a very special service dog, Tuesday.  Today they travel the country in tandem telling others how service dogs can changes the lives of our wounded soldiers. If you’d like to learn more about Luis Montalvan and his therapy dog, Tuesday please check out www. Luismontalvan.net and read his book “Until Tuesday”.  It was on the New York Times Best seller list for multiple years and rightfully so.  Just do yourself a favor and have a box of tissues handy.

 Our Amazing Testimonials !!

“When I moved to NH 10 years ago, I knew I would be going back to visit family and friends, so one of the first things I asked my new colleagues about was a good pet sitting service.  The first three people I asked – all cat lovers like me – said they used & highly recommended Professional Pet Sitting Etc.  I have been using them ever since and my experience with them has always been very positive.

Their policy is to have the same person, whenever possible, care for your pets, so the pets can get used to that person.  One of my cats is extremely shy & anxious.  It is only in the last couple of years that she has felt comfortable enough to show herself to the pet sitter.  Knowing how easily frightened (& very neurotic!) she is, I am surprised she comes out at all.  I believe this is due to the consistent & familiar presence of Rachelle, who I think if as “our” pet sitter.  Both cats seem calm, relaxed and in good health when I return.   Rachelle always leaves me a note telling me how my cats were during my absence, which I very much appreciate.

Recently, I had a family emergency & had to leave the state abruptly, contacting Professional Pet Sitting Etc. on a day they are not usually in the office.  The proprietor, Dori, got back to me very quickly & assured me that they would always be responsive in an emergency.  When I returned to NH, I had to again leave very abruptly & had to request their services again.  I was very upset and disorganized during this time, yet Dori was very patient and understanding, which helped make a very difficult situation a bit less painful & difficult.

I highly recommend Professional Pet Sitting Etc.  They provide quality services that I expect to be using for many years to come.  My cats are part of my family, and I want only the best care for them.  Professional Pet Sitting Etc. has always provided that for us.”

“I’ve been a client for well over 5 years and couldn’t be more pleased. In addition to being consistently reliable and accommodating, Dori, Rachelle, and the staff at Professional Pet Sitting, etc. continue to go above and beyond with regards to any concern I’ve encountered with my two cats. About a year ago, Henry developed a liver problem and required tube feeds three times a day for several weeks before he could eat on his own. I don’t know how I would have managed if Rachel hadn’t been available to help me with his feeds. Even more recently, Oskar stopped routinely using his litter box and after several unsuccessful attempts with new litters, boxes, etc., Dori spent an unbelievable amount of time troubleshooting the problem with me and came up with a strategy that has my household well on the way back to normalcy (thank god). The folks at Professional Pet Sitting, etc. treat your pets as though they were your own; I couldn’t ask for a better team taking care of my cats.”

“I used Prof. Pet Sitting for over 10 years. I liked that almost always the same pet sitter came, so my cats got to know them, and that if something happened and the assigned pet sitter couldn’t make it, PPS would send someone else. As my cats aged, it became important that they had a bond with the sitter; I travel quite a bit, sometimes for as much as 2 weeks at a time. I used to joke that the cats loved the sitter more than me! As my cats aged, the pet sitter was even more alert with them. When my little Shadow (age 16) had to be euthanized, the sitter was as upset as I was. On my last trip, a cruise, my Bashir (age 19) started failing, and the pet sitter noticed the change. PPS got in touch with me right away, as well as my adult daughter who lives nearby. The pet sitter started staying longer (at no extra charge) so Bashir wouldn’t be alone. By the time I got home I had to let go of Bashir too, and the pet sitter was just as upset as before. The people I’ve had come out from PPS have all been caring and my cats loved them. I think they’re great, and love the peace of mind I had when they were caring for my cats.”

“I have used Professional Pet Sitting since 2004. Dori is extremely organized and this creates a great confidence in her reliability. Her pet sitters are friendly and our dogs love them. This gives us a great deal of relief that when we go on vacation, we can trust that our dogs will be well taken care of in our own home. We use PPS on a regular basis and they are very reliable and thorough!”

“The best thing about Professional Pet sitting is the peace of mind I get . I trust Professional Pet sitting. I am very anxious about long days at work with my “kids” at home alone….Dori is the best and her staff is well selected and trained.”

Dan Beaulieu

“I have been with Professional Pet Sitting, Etc for about 1 year now. The registration was simple and easy. They explained everything to me. The pet sitter that came to my house was wonderful and treated my dogs great. My dogs love when she comes over and knows its playtime. I am glad Professional Pet Sitting, Etc exists because I know my dogs are cared for when I am at work. I love using Professional Pet Sitting. They always are there for my “babies” even if my plans change. When I am away, I always know that there will be someone there to take care of my babies and make sure they are happy. Dori is wonderful and so easy to talk to. If I ever have a question, she is right there. My babies love their mid-day visits too. It is really good to know that they can get a potty break while I am at work.”

Richie Demaine

************************************************************

“I absolutely love and trust Professional Pet Sitting Etc with taking care of my 2 cats. Dori and her staff are extremely professional and animal knowledgeable. I like the fact that they require I keep 2 house keys with them at all times — one for the pet sitter and one as a back up at their office should my primary pet sitter not be able to pet sit for any reason. How many individual pet sitters do you know that think that far ahead? I have even called while already in transit needing last minute pet sitting and they’ve been able to accommodate my needs because they do keep my payment method on file. I can’t think of any reason not to use their services. They are animal advocates and I know my animals’ well being will be of highest priority while I’m away.”

Brenda B. -see update next

“Just an update from the review above !! I continue to utilize Professional Pet Sitting Etc’s services and couldn’t be more pleased. Recently I had to be away from town (my cats were actually with me). Who better to ask if they could add a service of visiting my house once in a while for pay just to keep an eye on it? They already have a key and I trust them completely so I asked. That’s one of the nicest features of the business, They are flexible and quick on their toes to respond to their customers’ needs. So, you need something special for your pets or your house? Give them a call. They’re there to help!”

Brenda Brackman

“I had never used a pet sitting service before so naturally I was skeptical…My puppy dog is my son and he only deserves the best! Back in February I needed to go in for heart surgery which means I would not be able to walk my puppy dog during lunch for at least 2 months…My husband works and so does all of my family…I was beside myself because I had a 2 year old puppy dog that NEEDS lots of exercise (he is walked 3-4 times per day)…I decided to try Professional Pet sitting Etc BEFORE I went for surgery to ensure they would be a good fit…My husband and I were very impressed with their solid practice of ensuring pets are taken good care of..Our puppy dog loves all the pet walkers and they love him…I thought we would only use them for my recovery time but we have decided to keep them coming because they are so reliable, reasonably priced (I know this because I had to use another pet sitter up north for my brother when he had a stroke), and trustworthy…We are so pleased we have the extra support we need…THANK YOU Professional Pet sitting Etc for making our lives more peaceful and our puppy dog happy :)”

“I LOVE them (PPSE) and so do my boys (I have 2 Shepherds). I was nervous at first about leaving my boys at home when I went back to work full time. I called Professional Pet Sitting and they really put me at ease about leaving them during the day. I did have to go through a registration process which basically asked a lot of information about my boys, what they like to do and how they could make them happy and get the most out of the time the petsitter would be spending with them. I thought that was really great. So I am now doing mid days with them and my boys are so happy when I get home, you can tell they have had a lot of fun with the sitter and she always leaves me great notes about what they did and how the boys were for the day (Thank you so much Rita!) I really am glad that I found them and that I can trust somebody with my boys during the day to make sure they are happy.”

“I have found this pet sitting company more than reliable. I have always had wonderful service from their employees. My dogs are always happy to see them when they arrive to walk them on their daily walks while I work from home.”

“I know first hand what great care the petsitters from Professional Pet Sitting Etc. give to the furry, scaley, wet, slimey, soft, cuddly and not so cuddly pets that they visit. This is a company totally focused on the well being and happiness of the animals and the clients. I’ve known the owner for about 12 yrs and would trust her with my animals AND my children!”

Tricia Glastetter

“My husband and I have been customers here for the past nine years. The service is as close to perfect as it gets. Your petsitter feeds and plays with your animals and they leave notes about what happens. The notes always capture the animals’ individual personalities which demonstrates they are taking the time to really know your pets. The flexibility noted in a previous review was key for us when my mother was suffering from a terminal illness. It was nice not to have something extra to worry about during that time. I would also like to note that we appreciated the thoroughness of the application process. When I saw the application, we knew that this company was the one for us. Nothing is left to chance. Our animals are always happy and content when we get home. We’ve referred many people to this service and all have been happy with it. It’s a terrific service!”

“I am so glad I chose Professional Pet Sitting to check on my Dog and Cat during a business day trip. I normally work from home but I had an at length business meeting in Boston that was crucial to attend. I had a ton of anxiety worrying who to find to check on my “kids”. I got Professional Pet sittings number from a friend. I called and i really grilled them with questions which reflected my anxiety of making sure I got top notch care. Dorinne the owner answered all my questions to my satisfaction and did so cheerfully. I have a friendly but hyper Pit Bull and an Orange Tabby who is an escape artist and I expressed my concerns if Dorinne can handle my kids. She assured me her and her staff were quite capable. I decided to entrust them and I found I made a very good decision doing so. I now feel at ease that if I have another extended day out of the house I know who to call. I cannot express how much that means to me, I worry tremendously about my pets and like all care they get, It has to meet MY high standard..Not what someone else deems as high. Professional Pet sitting met my high standard.”

“We use PPS, Etc., every time my husband and I go away we call Dori to get a pet sitter in to take care of our boys, Ronin and Cypher. It is a great piece of mind to know our boys are home, safe, and well taken care of when we are out of state. We have had great experiences every time we leave the boys at the house with the pet sitter. The boys love Rita – our usual pet sitter. This service is invaluable as it provides piece of mind when you are away – your pets are safe, at home, well taken care of, not susceptible to diseases or sicknesses if they were away at boarding. Your fur babies are loved, and best of all – THEY ARE THERE when you get home from vacation!”

“I’ve used Prof. Pet Sitting since 1995. The sitters have always been wonderful and compassionate. It gave me great peace in the thoroughness of how they got to know my pets and how I feed, walk and care for all of my pets that I have had in these past years. Dori has been there for me when a few of my pets passed away. What comfort. I have always paid by credit card. I will be going away the day after Christmas and I am already booked with my favorite sitter! I love this service.”

Eva Belle

************************************************************

“Our Christmas was so hectic this year but I was able to relax because I knew the pet sitter would be here to support us…Thank God for this service…I don’t think I would have made it through this holiday season without them!”

Joyce N.

************************************************************

This Christmas Gift may arrive late, but we can never THANK YOU enough. You are a blessing to us and to Mac & Millie! Thank you for coming into our lives. We appreciate ALL that you do. Thank you, Thank you,

John and Chris

” I’ve used Prof Pet Sitting service for about 12 years now and they are the best. A couple of times my plans changed while I was away, and all it took was a call to Dori and everything was taken care of – no worries about my cats at all. And my cats actually love Rachelle and some of the other sitters more than me, I think. –

Patricia Dodd

************************************************************

” I always use your services for my 2 cats when I’m away and feel very assured they get great care. I get extra reassurance when I return home by how content and unstressed they are. Thanks!

Brenda Barducci.

“Dori, Thank you for providing such a wonderful service for our dogs [mid-day let out]. I was very worried about my two older dogs due to their complicated medical conditions, but your service alleviated all of my worries. The dog walkers who came to our house were all kind, professional, and very attentive to the needs of our dogs. It was clear that they truly cared about our dogs! I am retiring and no longer need pet sitting, but I wouldn’t hesitate call you again if the need arises. I’d recommend you to anyone!” –

Donna Ferranti

We were introduced to Professional Pet Sitting several years ago when my little Rudy needed extra daytime care and attention. We were so impressed that we decided to trust the service so that we could go on vacation…something we hadn’t been able to do because we just couldn’t trust a kennel again. Boarding her in a kennel had always ended with Rudy being downright mad at us. She sulked, wouldn’t eat, and was just SO unhappy. After leaving her in the care of Professional Pet Sitting, Rudy’s behavior always told us that she had received lots of TLC!!! She was happy to see us!!!! As a matter of fact, I think I was a little jealous. Well, Rudy has since then passed away, but I will be forever grateful to Dori and her staff! Thank you Dori…for all you do, and for how much you care! –

Vangie Collins

” I always recommend Professional Pet Sitting Etc. to anyone looking for great pet care. As a friend of Dori’s, I know first hand how hard she’s worked to make her service top notch. It’s a 365 day a year work obsession for her and there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make it so reliable. When you leave home, there’s no doubt in my mind that your pet(s) will be cared for. –

Della Fortin

” As a previous employee of Professional Petsitting I was impressed by how organized the company was which made it easy to complete my work assignments. My work schedule was perfect for me and fit in to my daily routine. The hours were flexible and if I had any concerns or issues, they were taken care of right away. It was a great job for me since I love all types of animals and it gave me a chance to spend time with them. My job was very enjoyable and rewarding. Working for Dori was a pleasure! –

Cathy Trudo

I have worked for professional pet sitting for 8 years now and it is a great company to work for. You can make your own schedule so it is great as a second job. Also it is great for people who love animals because you get to spend time with many different animals as you get to go to many different houses in any given week. The boss Dori is a great person to work for and with. I love working for the company! –

Lisa Wilson

I was a previous employee of Professional petsitting and I can attest to the level of professionalism and care for the business by Dori (owner) .This is not a temporary business. It is well grounded and very well run to details and concern for the clients. I was well trained and I was thoroughly background checked and equally as important was hired because of my love for helping the clients pets. It was not enough to just be trained and sent off to the visits, Dori personally supervised several of my first visits to ensure I understood the particular and unique training to Professional Petsitting training she provides to all the sitters. The training she provides is well organized , detailed and unique for the sitters to properly serve the clients and be well prepared. As hard as they work, I found something common to all the sitters at Professional Petsitting….They had fun too because they enjoyed working for the clients and their furry best friends!
Brad Bergeron

I have worked for Professional Pet Sitting for over 10 years and have to say in all honesty I love my job. I get plenty of exercise, fresh air and more importantly get to take care of lots of lovely pets.
Dori is a terrific boss who, naturally, expects all her sitters to comply with her rules. If you do then you will have no problems. –

My wife Kathy and I have been part of the Professional Pet Sitting family for more than five years. We are Executive Coaches and cat lovers to boot. Dorinne has built a great business from scratch (no pun intended). She combines critical business skills with her unconditional love for our furry friends of all kinds and has become renowned throughout New England for her advocacy and knowledge of pet care. She hand selects each of her pet sitters and personally trains them to provide only the best care for their charges. If you care about your pets and want only the best for them, call Professional Pet Sitting Etc. –

They consistently deliver quality services when watching our cat and make sure she is well fed, happy, and looked after. They have an excellent track record in dealing with the normal vacation and business travel pet service requirements and I would happily recommend them. Professional Pet Sitters is an excellent value for the money. Their service allows us to have the capability to travel and gives us the peace of mind to be comfortable in leaving her home alone. This being the first time ever, that Scooter has been left alone for several days and cared for by someone other than Ed or I. He was happy and playful upon our return – so I know that he was very well taken care of in our absence. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts (Scooter’s too). –

Your extra care and advice gave us months that we may not have had. Those memories are priceless and will always be with us – as will our thanks to all of you. With greatest appreciation”

Maureen and Bryant Quilliam

************************************************************

“I am so glad we found your service. It is so much easier to just call you and know our pets are cared for. We never have to pick them up or drop them off. This is great and my pets seem much happier, calmer and they are here whenever we get home, even at 2 am. Thank you.”

Daphne Kenyon

************************************************************

“I felt so guilty when I went to work full time and had to leave our dog home alone all day, when he was used to me being there every day. Now I know that you are there every day, giving him much needed exercise and a potty break. Now when I come home he is a joy and not so needy. Just knowing that you are there every day, I don’t feel panicked wondering if he had an accident or was he uncomfortable holding it until I got home. Some days he just barely made it out the door before he had to go. Thank you for your service. “

Maryann Knowles

************************************************************

“My husband and I have been utilizing your service for several years. We could not be more pleased with the care that our animals receive when we are not home. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of our pets.”

Elizabeth Dobbins

************************************************************

“Thank you for all your expertise in animal behavior. We didn’t know what to do when we adopted our sweet angel from the rescue. With your help we persisted and she is the love of our life.”

Elaine Austin

“You are angels in disguise and we are very grateful for you.” –

Paul and Maria Gilmartin

************************************************************

“I can’t thank you enough for all the care you provided to our pets when my husband was rushed to the hospital. With one phone call, you took over and I could give my full attention to my husband. Thank you so much for your help.”

Catherine Ford

************************************************************

“Before we found your service, we had not been on a vacation in years because I couldn’t think of putting my babies in a kennel. Now that we found you, I feel free to travel the world. I can’t believe how wonderful it is to know you and your staff are caring for my babies. THANK YOU.”

Kendra Mann

************************************************************

“Thank you for providing your wonderful service all these years.”

Nori Odoi

************************************************************

From the perspective of Heidi, the dog: “Through the years when Mommy and Mr. Dan would go away on weekends or on vacation, Dori or one of her pet sitters would come and care for me. I have always been very independent – even as a puppy I was never very “friendly” – and this only increased as I got older. But they always took such great care of me, leaving notes for each visit describing how I reacted to them, how I ate, where I was, etc., that Mr. Dan and Mommy always felt as though they had been right here with me all along.”
Heidi – sadly Heidi passed away

************************************************************

“Thank you for the peace of mind you provide while we are away. It makes our vacation so much more fun.”

Amy & Bill Kasting

************************************************************

“It was such a pleasure to return home from our vacation to clean litter boxes and healthy, happy kitties! My daughter was especially thrilled that her fish tank was still clear and clean — not an easy task with six starving fish eyes begging for more food. You are the best!”
Robin McGee

************************************************************

“Thank you for all the help with our pet. It was so frustrating not knowing what to do.” –

Mary Hermansen

************************************************************

“Sam needs to be let out during the day while I am at work. He has a lot of energy, and it’s been nice having someone there to walk him these past 8 years.”
– Carol Hordis
Sadly Sam passed away….we miss Sam terribly and send love, thoughts and prayers to his family.

************************************************************

“I’m really glad we found someone to love our dogs as much as we do, with all the travel we do. Thanks for all you do!” –

Clara & Richard Levesque

************************************************************

“Thank you again for saving my Keemo. After calling around for help and repeatedly getting ‘no’ for an answer, I bless the day I called you. I always looked forward to his obedience lessons and enjoyed your training so very much…Keemo and I are inseparable now and he is a great joy in my life.”
Esther Levesque

************************************************************

“I have multiple pets, each requiring different kinds of attention. The dogs all need to be let out during the day while I’m at work. And when the family goes on vacation, it’s nice to know someone will be taking take care of Scooter’s litter box and Bob’s birdcage as well. Professional Pet Sitting, Etc. is a godsend!”

Paw Injuries –

.

What to look for

.

and

.

What to do

.

Author,  Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Did you know that injuries to the paws are quite common in dogs?  It’s true and once you really think about it, it makes perfect sense.  After all, our dogs spend a lot of time on their paws! Running on the pavement, hiking in the woods, and walking on the ice and snow are just a few examples of the wear and tear our dog’s paws take!

So what exactly causes injuries to our dog’s paws? The list is endless, really but here are a few possible causes:

  • Cracked pads from the weather (hot, dry, cold elements are all culprits)
  • Insect bites such as bees, wasps or red ants
  • Broken toenails (keep those nails trimmed!)
  • Rocks between his toes (or other objects such as twigs and burrs or even ice particles)
  • Cuts and lacerations (ice, glass and other sharp objects)

Now that you know some of the causes of paw injuries, you might be wondering what the signs are.  Watch for these signs:

  • Chewing or Licking of the paws
  • Whining, yelping or crying
  • Avoiding the use of or neglecting to put pressure on the suspect paw
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching

There are a few things you can do to help your pet keep his paws in good health.  Start by paying close attention to where you walk your dog.  There are many chemicals and contaminants that your dog comes in contact with on a daily basis. It’s always a good idea to wash your dog’s paws off after a walk. After washing off your dog’s paws, consider using a balm to keep the pads on his feet from becoming dry and cracked.  You should also check between your dog’s toes to make sure little rocks or other objects have not become lodged in between his toes or even between the pads on his paws. During the winter months, be sure to use pet friendly de-icers.  Aside from causing injury to your dog’s paws, your dog may ingest harmful chemicals as he licks his paws and that can be downright deadly.

It’s a great responsibility to care for a dog.  Your dog’s overall health, from his ears right down to his paws, is up to you!  Be a good steward, your canine pal is counting on you.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction

Dysfunction

.

.

 Author,  Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Has your senior dog been displaying behavioral changes?  Behavioral changes in senior dogs are often the result of an underlying physical health problem but can also be indicative of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction.  Canine Cognitive Dysfunction or CCD results as a senior dog’s cognitive abilities deteriorate similar to Alzheimer’s in their human counterparts.

What are the symptoms of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction?

  • Aggression towards family members
  • Change in sleep habits
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of interest in play or socialization
  • Eliminating in the house
  • Change in eating habits particularly a loss in appetite
  • Staring at the wall
  • Startling easily
  • Restlessness
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty learning new commands or seems to forget previously learned commands

Your veterinary doctor will work closely with you as he diagnoses your dog.  He will mostly likely need to rule out some other health issues via diagnostic testing before he can definitely diagnose your dog with Canine Cognitive dysfunction.  However, the more information you can provide your vet, the better.  You should be able to discuss any and all behavioral changes that you have noticed in your senior dog.  Dogs with CCD lack dopamine activity so your veterinarian may prescribe a popular drug by the name of anipryl.  This drug may reduce some of the symptoms associated with CCD.  However, just as with other areas of veterinary medicine, a holistic approach towards treating and preventing CCD is gaining more popularity.  You may consider working with a holistic vet to come up with a plan in addition to the conventional medicine plan that has been put in place.  Dietary considerations and supplements are key components that should not be overlooked in your dog’s medical plan.

With your help, some environmental changes may make the onset of CCD a little easier on your dog.  Avoid moving the furniture as this will only serve to confuse your dog.  Try to keep his day on a routine.  Doing this will keep stress at bay or at least not add to your dog’s stress.  Be sure to set aside time to play with and exercise your dog.  Even if his memory is failing, that does not mean your dog should be ignored and it certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t attempt to teach him new things or interact with him.  Just keep in mind that he may get frustrated just as elderly humans do when they are suffering from dementia.  Always exercise patience with your dog and understand that he will need breaks and may frustrate easily, which may bring about some of the symptoms such as aggression with you.

When dealing with an aging dog, the best thing you can do is provide lots of tender love and care.  After all, your senior dog has provided you with many years of loyalty and love.  It’s only fair that he lives out his final years with a kind, patient and ever faithful pet parent.  That heart of the puppy that you loved and nurtured many years ago is still beating inside your senior dog’s chest.

Pet Care Tips

From

A NH

Pet Care

Professional

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Having been in the animal field most of my life, working in animal welfare, animal rescue,

Animal Hospitals and now in the Largest NH Pet Sitting Company, I have put together a few

Pet Care Tips for every month, here is the Month of January.

Update Calendar

As you flip over to the new year.  Put reminders when your pet’s Veterinary Visit is due.  Include Annual physical, vaccines and Heartworm check (for dogs).  Do not forget to check their teeth.  Dental health should be checked annually.

Keep Pets Inside

Rule to keep in mind – if it is cold out for you, it is cold out for a pet.  If they are to be outside for any length of time, Please make sure that they have a full shelter to get out of the cold, rain, snow and wind.  They can freeze and get frostbite just as we can.

Check your car/truck’s engine before starting

Many Cats, wildlife and other animals may try to keep warm inside a vehicle. Engines are nice and warm right after you come home and park.  Sometimes clapping your hands and speaking loudly may scare an animal away.  If you can, open your hood and inspect the inside before starting.

Increase the calories

If your pet will be spending alot of time outside, you may want to increase food.  Keeping warm takes added energy.

Keep Pets away from any puddles

Puddles may contain antifreeze.  It is lethal to pets and humans.  Animals can be attracted to it because it is sweet.  Clean thoroughly if you spill.

Check paws

Check paws daily for chapped and cracked paw pads.  Use Bag Balm to keep soft.

Use a Sweater

Short coated dogs may get cold very fast.  Consider buying a coat or sweater to help.  Boots may be hard for them to get used to but may also be a good idea.

Wipe Paws

Wipe paws, feet and legs after each walk.  They may pick up deicers, salt, antifreeze or other chemicals while walking.  You would want to clean that off before your pet has time to lick off.

Avoid all Ice on Lakes/Ponds

Unless your know for SURE that the ice is completely solid and 6 or more inches thick with temperatures below freezing consistently for at least 3 or more weeks, do not even chance your life or your pets life.

Be Prepared

Be Prepared for severe weather, blizzards & power outages.  Have a plan in place that includes pets if you must leave your home.  Never leave your pets, even if people say you will be back in a little while, too many times, something happens and that little while may be a day or longer.  Also have extra food and water for you and your pets.  Check out our Disaster Planning for You and Your pets for more Helpful ideas.

Help Your Neighborhood Stray

Help any cats or dogs that may be abandoned in your neighborhood.  Many pets are left behind with owners hoping some kind person will take them in.  Or that abandoned female cat, has kittens and now there are feral kittens in the neighborhood.  If you can contact organizations to help trap them, they can help the animals find homes.  If feral, there are organizations that will trap them, make sure they are healthy, spay and neuter them and find barn homes for them or if you will help feed and make them a shelter, they can be returned to live out their life without having more kittens.

Speak Out if you see a Pet in the Cold

If you see a pet consistently kept out in the cold, rain, snow.  Say something to your local animal control.  Document everything you see, dates, times, if you see anyone giving fresh water or food.  It could mean life or death to that pet.

Protect Horses Too

Horses and other livestock need shelter as well.  They need to be able to get out of the cold, rain, snow and wind.  To keep warm, they also need extra food.  Water needs to be checked often so that it is not frozen.

Pets in Need

How can you help

*

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

When you think of pets in need, most people think of humane societies, humane shelters and rescues.  There certainly are many pets in need in those facilities and organizations.  However, adopting a pet is not the only way you can help pets in need.  There are lots of ways you can help these organizations and more.

Here is how –

ADOPT –

This is always a way to help a pet in need.  If you are ready to add a new furry love to your family, by all means adopt.  The added love in your home will be well worth it.  But there are many things you can do besides adopting.

FOSTER –

Here is a way to help many pets.  I foster orphaned kittens for a shelter.  These kittens could be orphaned and still nursing, they could be too young to vaccinate and therefore can not go into a shelter where they would be susceptible to many diseases.  If you have room and time to care for an orphan kitten or puppy, it is rewarding.  Many organizations also need help with pregnant moms (cats and dogs).  The shelter is not a place for a pregnant mom, too much going on, too stressful, etc.  They need a quiet, warm home where they can finish their pregnancy, deliver their babies and care for their babies until they are ready to be adopted.

DONATE MONEY –

Every organization can make your dollar stretch to help the animals in their care.  This is always a great way to help your local organization.

TRAIN –

If you know how to train the basics, many shelters would love to have the dogs trained in basic – sit, down, come, stay.  Dogs that are trained are always a plus to be adopted.

SOCIALIZE –

All the cats and dogs need love and attention.  Maybe you can just sit and give them attention.  The animals need it. Sitting and brushing or petting an animal not only de-stresses that animal but also de-stresses YOU.   Many shelters have socialization programs.

DONATE NEEDED ITEMS –

Paper Towels (they go through cases)

Trash bags

Kitty Litter (call the organization to find out if they use a certain kind, many organizations like to use one kind for consistency for the cats.)

Food – dog, cat, kitten, puppy, dry or canned.  This is always in need.  (Call the organization to find out if they use a certain kind, many organizations like to use one kind for consistency for the pets.)

Towels, blankets, sheets (new or used)

Newspaper

Small boxes (That cans are packed in.  They can be used as litter boxes)

Toys

Treats

Brushes and other grooming items

Stainless steel bowls

Shelving Units (heavy duty on wheels for storage)

Storage Boxes

Pet Formula

Pet Nursing Bottles

VOLUNTEER TIME –

Shelters need volunteers for many things, just ask what they need

MAKE PET ITEMS –

Pet beds

Pet toys

VOLUNTEER YOUR EXPERTISE –

Can you do bookkeeping, cpa, taxes

Landscaper, lawn mowing, snow plow

Carpenter

Plumber

Painter

Artist – paint a mural, donate your works of art for auction

GIVE GIFT CERTIFICATES –

WILDLIFE –

Become a wildlife rehabilitator in your state

Donate to a rehabber person or organization, they can always

CARE FOR A FERAL COLONY –

Many shelters do a trap-neuter-release.  Volunteers are needed to help bring food on a daily basis.  Making warm shelters is also needed.  Making sure that people do not harm them or poison them.

Pets as Gifts – Is it a Good Idea

Gifts

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

You have a pet lover on your gift list and thought a new pet would be the perfect gift.

Please think long and hard before giving a living breathing animal as a gift. Pets as gifts require many things to consider.

The times that many people think of giving a pet as a gift are Birthdays, Easter, Christmas and after a person has lost a beloved pet. Weeks and months after a pet is given at these times is also the times these pets may be given up. If not given up, the pets may enjoy a wonderful life but the joy of choosing one’s own pet was not given.

The one thing I have witnessed over and over again in all the years that I have been in animal welfare is when an animal chooses a person, the bond is special. If you have ever been chosen by a pet, you know what I mean.

Keep in mind –

  • Adding a pet to a family is a very personal choice.
  • Not every pet is right for every family
  • Not every family is right for every pet
  • What you may think is the perfect pet maybe the last thing the person receiving would actually get for themselves.
  • A person may prefer to add a dog instead of getting another cat or may decide to add a cat instead of another dog.
  • Maybe they prefer a male over a female or the other way around.
  • Maybe they absolutely love black but would never consider another black pet because it reminds them of the one they lost and it would be too painful.

If there was a loss of a pet, and they are grieving, many people think getting another pet to replace that pet will help.  Keep in mind, a pet that was deeply loved can never be replaced. Grieving is a very individualized thing.  Some people do well with adding a pet soon after that loss, some take much longer. It took me 5 years after losing my Siberian Husky before I was ready for another dog. If you bring a pet to a grieving person who may not be ready, you may add to that grieving if they must give up the new pet as well.

Adding a pet to a family is a decision that is a long term decision. Dogs and cats can live 15-20 years or more. Large bird breeds can live upwards of 50 years and it is advised to put them in your will and trust (all pets should be as well).

Then there is the financial aspect of owning pets. In the first year, expenses can run into $1000-2000 with pet food, vaccines, spay/neuter, etc.  If it is a pet that has medical issues that are not known when acquired, it could be higher.

A pet as a present will require a lot of time and money from the person that will be receiving the pet. Can they handle this?  Do they want to?  There is a lot to consider and if this will be a surprise, you may think you know all the answers but maybe the reason this person has not gone out to get a new pet is because it is not the right time.

So, should you throw this idea out the window?  Not necessarily.  Here are some ideas on giving the gift of a pet without actually giving a pet. This way, when the recipient is ready, all they have to do is choose.

You can make up a basket or fill a decorated box with everything they need.  Or fill a crate or pet carrier. Fill with everything on our list (lucky person and pet) or choose just a few.

Ideas For Dogs –

  • A note letting the person know that when they are ready you will be happy to take them to choose their pet
  • A note stating that you will pay for the pet of their choice
  • Pet Care Gift Certificate for mid day let out for a puppy while they are at work or dog walking for their new dog or whenever they may need a pet care visit at their home from a professional pet sitting company (Professional Pet Sitting Etc has gift certificates in any amount)
  • Pooper Scooper
  • Pet waste bags and carrier
  • Leashes, collars, harness
  • Pet Identification
  • Pet Video Camera
  • Pet GPS
  • Microchipping
  • Training Gift Certificate
  • Training/behavior books and videos
  • Pet Insurance
  • Animal Hospital Gift Certificate
  • Care Credit information (this is a special line of credit to be used for your pet whenever it is needed.  This can be used for regular or unexpected medical, emergencies, etc.  Depending on the amount, you could have up to 6 months interest free to pay off the balance. Bonus is that this can also be used for human medical and dental as well!)
  • Pet Food (enough for a few days, a week, a month)
  • Grooming Gift Certificate
  • Brushes, combs
  • Nail Clippers
  • Toys of all sorts
  • Treats
  • Beds, blankets

Ideas For Cats –

  • A note letting the person know that when they are ready you will be happy to take them to choose their pet
  • A note stating that you will pay for the pet of their choice
  • Pet Care Gift Certificate for Litter box cleaning while they are at work or whenever they may need a pet care visit at their home from a professional pet sitting company (Professional Pet Sitting Etc has gift certificates in any amount)
  • Litter Scoops
  • Litterboxes (at least two)
  • Leashes, collars, harness
  • Pet Identification
  • Pet Video Camera
  • Pet GPS
  • Microchipping
  • Training/behavior books and videos
  • Pet Insurance
  • Animal Hospital Gift Certificate
  • Care Credit information (this is a special line of credit to be used for your pet whenever it is needed. This can be used for regular or unexpected medical, emergencies, etc. Depending on the amount, you could have up to 6 months interest free to pay off the balance.  Bonus is that this can also be used for human medical and dental as well!)
  • Pet Food (enough for a few days, a week, a month)
  • Grooming Gift Certificate
  • Brushes, combs
  • Scratching posts and trees of all sizes
  • Nail Clippers
  • Toys of all sorts (especially laser and feather toys)
  • Treats
  • Beds, blankets

If you are planning on giving another type of pet such as a bird, hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, duckling, chick, etc.  Please do ALOT of research.  There are Facebook groups for all of these pets and more.  Ask questions on what they would love as a gift for complete care for the type of pet you are considering.

If your friend rents, please check and find out what is allowed.  If you are thinking of a German Shepherd puppy and the rental agreement only allows cats and dogs under 25 pounds, that will be a bit disappointing.

List of Pet Friendly Rentals

If you are thinking of a horse, pony, ducks, chickens, goats, etc. You may need to check with the city your friend lives in to make sure that their home is zoned for such animals. Also, these are animals that will need a building for them to be housed in. You may need to do further research for housing plans, costs and make sure there is room and zoning for that as well. Ducks and chickens may also be in danger of wildlife in the area, so please take that into consideration.

What are some ideas that you can give to a Pet Lover without giving an actual Pet?

If they already have pets –

  • Pet Care Gift Certificates – they can always use help with pet care if they go out to dinner and need a supper visit or a dog walk when they are gone all day(Professional Pet Sitting Etc has gift certificates in any amount)
  • Animal Hospital Gift Certificate
  • Really anything on the above two lists will work

If they do not have any pets and a new pet is not right at this time –

  • Donate to a local shelter or animal organization in the person’s name
  • Donate to a local shelter or animal organization in the person’s pet’s name

Happy Gift Giving !!
