Paw Injuries –

.

What to look for

.

and

.

What to do

.

Author,  Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Did you know that injuries to the paws are quite common in dogs?  It’s true and once you really think about it, it makes perfect sense.  After all, our dogs spend a lot of time on their paws! Running on the pavement, hiking in the woods, and walking on the ice and snow are just a few examples of the wear and tear our dog’s paws take!

So what exactly causes injuries to our dog’s paws? The list is endless, really but here are a few possible causes:

  • Cracked pads from the weather (hot, dry, cold elements are all culprits)
  • Insect bites such as bees, wasps or red ants
  • Broken toenails (keep those nails trimmed!)
  • Rocks between his toes (or other objects such as twigs and burrs or even ice particles)
  • Cuts and lacerations (ice, glass and other sharp objects)

Now that you know some of the causes of paw injuries, you might be wondering what the signs are.  Watch for these signs:

  • Chewing or Licking of the paws
  • Whining, yelping or crying
  • Avoiding the use of or neglecting to put pressure on the suspect paw
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching

There are a few things you can do to help your pet keep his paws in good health.  Start by paying close attention to where you walk your dog.  There are many chemicals and contaminants that your dog comes in contact with on a daily basis. It’s always a good idea to wash your dog’s paws off after a walk. After washing off your dog’s paws, consider using a balm to keep the pads on his feet from becoming dry and cracked.  You should also check between your dog’s toes to make sure little rocks or other objects have not become lodged in between his toes or even between the pads on his paws. During the winter months, be sure to use pet friendly de-icers.  Aside from causing injury to your dog’s paws, your dog may ingest harmful chemicals as he licks his paws and that can be downright deadly.

It’s a great responsibility to care for a dog.  Your dog’s overall health, from his ears right down to his paws, is up to you!  Be a good steward, your canine pal is counting on you.

September Pet Care Tips

Cat

Ricky enjoying a warn autumn day

As a Pet Care Professional since 1978,

I have learned a few Pet Care Tips

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Having been in the animal field all of my life, working in animal welfare, animal rescue,

Animal Hospitals and now in the Largest NH Pet Sitting Company, I have put together a few

Pet Care Tips for every month, here is the Month of September

  • Beware of School Supplies – It’s back-to-school time, if you have been school shopping, you may have fun items like glue sticks, pencils and magic markers. These items are considered “low toxicity” to pets and children.  This means they’re unlikely to cause serious problems unless large amounts are ingested. However, since gastrointestinal upset and blockages certainly are possible, be sure your children keep their school supplies out of paw’s reach and younger siblings.
  • Lonely Pets – Also Back to school and back to work may mean that your pets, who have been used to your presence all day long are now spending long hours alone.  This may bring on depression for your pet.  Some pets may get destructive.  This is a time to think about a routine dog walking service to burn off excess energy that they are not getting now that they are alone.  For puppies and elderly pets, they will need that middle of the day potty break.  If you do have an elderly pet, getting them up and moving around can help with their circulatory system and help with arthritis.
  • Call us today to ask about a routine Dog Walking/ Mid Day Let out package.

  • Training tip: If you and your pooch haven’t been active outdoors in a while because of the summer heat, do some remedial recall training. Dogs, like people, get rusty on their skills if they aren’t using them.
  • Toxic Mushrooms – Fall and spring and are mushroom seasons. While 99% of mushrooms have little or no toxicity, the 1% that are highly toxic can cause life-threatening problems in pets. Unfortunately, most of the highly toxic mushrooms are difficult to distinguish from the nontoxic ones, so the best way to keep pets from ingesting poisonous mushrooms is to keep them away from areas where any mushrooms are growing. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately if you witness your pet eating a wild mushroom.
  • Keep Pets Inside – The cold weather months are just around the corner.  Protect your pets by keeping them inside and having a disaster plan in place for them in case you lose power for an extended period of time.
  • Make your reservation Now for your October pet care reservation.
  • If you adopt a puppy or dog this month CONGRATULATIONS !!  Register online ASAP to set up Mid Day Let out so they have a break while you are at work and you will be ready when you may need a pet care visit anytime in the future.
  • If you adopt a kitten or cat this month – CONGRATULATIONS !!  Register online ASAP to set up Feline Fun Time, we can take care of the litter box and give then one on one attention while you are at work, plus you will be ready when you may need a pet care visit anytime in the future.

Happy Pet Owning !!
