Aromatherapy For Your Dog
Author, Noelle Dunn for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.
Essential oils should not be considered a trend, phase or a fad. Essential oils are actually used to treat many health and behavior problems in your pet. Arthritis, skin allergies, anxiety, and wound care, are only a few of the many conditions that can be treated through the use of essential oils or aromatherapy.
Here are just a few examples of popular essential oils and their amazing healing properties:
- Carrot Seed: promotes scar healing, soothes dry, flaky skin, acts as an anti-inflammatory
- Chamomile: soothes the central nervous system, relieves muscle cramps
- Geranium: repels ticks, relieves skin irritations and fungal ear infections
- Majoram: muscle relaxant, wound care, insect repellant
- Peppermint: treats motion sickness and nausea, relieves arthritis, strains and sprains
Are essential oils safe? Many pet parents worried about the potency of essential oils but most essential oils are safe when used properly. Due to the high concentration, it is imperative that you dilute all essential oils in carrier oil such as almond oil or olive oil. However, some oils are toxic to your pet so you must exercise caution and always do your research before you use anything (and ask a holistic veterinarian, to be on the safe side).
You MUST avoid the following oils:
- White thyme
- Clove leaf bud
How do I use essential oils?
Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways. The most common use of essential oils is through topical application. Oils are absorbed through the capillaries in the skin. The oils can be massaged or spritzed on the skin or added to a lotion, shampoo or salve. Some oils may be ingested however, please only use this method under the direction of a holistic vet. Experimenting on your own could cost your dog his life. You may also use a diffuser, which will enable your dog to inhale, or breathe in the oils as they evaporate in the air. Simply turn on the diffuser two times a day for about 30 minutes and you should see results by the seventh day.
Now that you know a little bit about aromatherapy and your dog, we hope you’ll do further research to explore the healing, soothing powers of these oils. Just remember to always use 100% pure oil and it must be of therapeutic grade. This is one cost you do not want to skimp on, folks.
