Can’t We

All Just

.

Get Along?

.

Author, Darlene Wagner Butler, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

If you’re the pet parent to a lone pet, the thought of welcoming another to your home has likely crossed your mind. After all, it’s said cats are best in pairs (a single cat is more likely to be lonely and needy, while a pair will keep each other busy and amused), and you can’t always be around to monitor your dog’s behavior and keep him from being destructive, but a buddy just may do the trick. And what about a Boxer brother with a Siamese sister? That must be the best of both worlds, right?

While there are many benefits in parenting two pets – such as additional companionship, increased socialization, improved mood and health – the fear of “what if they don’t get along?” is likely looming in the depths of your mind.  Sure, bringing home a cute kitty to join your canine companion may spell disaster, but with the proper preparation and follow-thru, the outcome can be spectacular.

Helping Pet Live Harmoniously takes time.

Here are a few helpful tips for making a smooth transition from a one pet household to two.

Obedience. If your current pet is a dog, ensure he is trained well enough to mind your commands to sit and stay. If a cat, you can find books on feline obedience training in the fiction section!

Take it slow. The number one rule in introducing a new furry family member is to do so gradually. To your current pet, bringing a new dog or cat into his home is an invasion of his territory. And for the new pet, being thrown into an unfamiliar environment leaves her with no boundaries or rules to follow. Effective methods of introduction are as follows:

  • Before introducing two dogs, take each for a long walk, with you and your current pooch in the lead with a friend or family member following behind with the newbie. This will drain their energy and allow them to become familiar with each other in a place that neither of them “owns.” After a while, drop back and allow your original dog to sniff the new guy’s rear, not allowing them to meet face-to-face just yet. Resume your walk, with your dog back in the lead, and allow the new dog to have a sniff. Gradually, you’ll find you’re able to walk together, with you and your friend between the dogs. When they are tired, calm and incident-free, it’s time to take the two to their home. Let your original dog enter first, giving him the opportunity to properly invite his new sibling inside.
  • Traditionally, we think of cats and dogs as mortal enemies; thankfully, that’s just not the case. When introducing a new dog to your kitty companion, place the two in separate rooms with an adjoining door. This will allow the two to get used to hearing and smelling each other without the risk of direct interaction. Place a blanket or towel with your new dog’s scent with your cat, and vice versa. Be sure to spend time bonding with each pet individually to allow time for them to become comfortable and relaxed in their separate environments. Once each appears comfortable with the current situation, switch their positions. It may be beneficial to switch their rooms multiple times during this pre-introduction stage. After a day or two, it will be time for a face-to-face introduction, with barrier between the two, such as a baby gate. Reward each for remaining calm, and discourage bad behavior. In most cases, with a little time and a lot of patience, your new dog and your cat will come to accept one another and become friends, or at least learn to tolerate each other. Just be sure to monitor their actions before allowing them to be together unsupervised.
  • If you are a pet parent to a cat, you’ve likely witnessed her territorial behavior. Believe it or not, the same approach you would follow when introducing a dog to a cat also applies when one cat is meeting another cat. When they get to the point of being able to share a space, set up their environment to encourage security, fun and plenty of territory for both cats. Use cat trees, perches and hideaways to create low, mid-level and high ‘getaways’ so each cat feels he has even more territory and security.

The decision to take on an additional pet is one that should not be made lightly. As you ponder, keep the following in mind:

  • Not all pets will get along with newcomers; do your research and assess personalities carefully before bringing home a new furry friend.
  • Pets of the opposite sex often accept each other more readily.
  • As a pet parent, you must spend one-on-one time with each of your fur babies.
  • Pets may fight over food, toys and territory – know how to properly handle such situations.
  • Spaying and neutering not only prevent unplanned litters, but can also reduce competitive behaviors.

How to

.

Get Amazing

.

Shots of Your Pets

Author, Darlene Wagner Butler, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Who wouldn’t like to capture an amazing shot of their pet, frame it and hang it on their wall for all to admire? After all, your pet IS the cutest there is, right? But cute doesn’t equal cooperative, and getting you four legged friend to sit still for a posed shot can be quite the chore. Not to mention capturing a blur-free, motion shot… nearly impossible! The task can be a daunting one, often leaving you – the photographer – disappointed and frustrated. If only your pet understood the commands “smile,” “look left,” and “say cheese.”

 Seeking that Picture Perfect Pet?

If that is your goal, here are a few handy dandy tips that may bring you closer to success:

  1. Get acquainted. Take out your camera and let your pet have a look and a sniff. Some pets can be extremely camera shy; not because they don’t want their photo taken, but because they don’t like the sound the camera makes, or an unknown object being so close. Give your pet time to get used to the shutter click and the camera itself.
  2. Just say no to digital zoom. If your camera has a zoom lens, use it! Your pet will feel much more comfortable without your camera getting up close and personal. If you can, turn off the digital zoom option, as it is simply a means of blowing up a picture without bringing it closer or capturing more detail. Optical zoom actually brings you closer to the subject – your perfect pet – and is much more important when it comes to photo quality.
  3. The right light. Natural light makes for the best pet photos. Ideal times to photograph your pet are early morning or just before dusk, when the sun isn’t too bright.
  4. Motivation is key. Motivate your pet by showing her favorite toy or treat. What dog can resist a cute head tilt when hearing her favorite squeaky toy? And what cat won’t look in the direction of her nemesis, the laser pointer? Promise your pet good tidings in exchange for a pretty pose and you’ll both be pleased with the outcome.
  5. Background. Be aware of your background, as a cluttered background will take away from your furry subject. It’s also helpful to be in an area with no distractions, like a dog park or a crowded beach.
  6. Get low. You’re likely a good 5+ feet taller than your pet. Shooting down on her takes away from the picture, so get down to her level. For small fur babies, this may mean getting down on all fours, or even lying on your stomach. You may be uncomfortable for a few seconds, get a bit dirty, and hear your bones popping as you stand back upright, but capturing your pet from a unique angle will totally be worth it all.
  7. Be patient! Chances are you’ll have to take many, many photos to get a few good ones.
  8. Edit. After your photo session, peruse all your pics and decide which ones are keepers. Focus on your pet’s body language and expression; don’t fret if there’s something in the background you don’t like – you can always crop it out. Looking for a simple photo editor? Try the LiPix app on Apple and Android devices, or download PicMonkey on your computer – both are free.
  9. Know your pet. Over time you’ll learn what does and does not work when photographing your furry friend. During the learning process, just be sure to keep it fun, stress-free and enjoyable for you both. After all, no one takes a good picture when they’re frustrated.

Shedding Solutions

image

Help,

.

There is

.

Hair

.

Everywhere !!

Author, Darlene Wagner Butler, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Does your home look like a scene from an old western, with tiny “tumbleweeds” made of pet hair rolling around on your floor? Does it seem like you vacuum up more hair from the floor that what is on your pet? It’s a fact of a pet’s life… most do shed, but with these shed-busting tips, you may have to clean up considerably less.

Groom regularly.

Running a brush through your pet’s hair several times a day, especially when he’s shedding up a storm, allows you to collect the hair and dispose of it in a baggy, rather than collecting it off the floor, sofa, bed, shelves… Visit your local pet supply store and pick up anything from a bristle brush (which vary according to the spacing between and the length of the bristles) to a slicker brush (a brush with fine wire bristles that reach into your pet’s undercoat to remove loose hair). If your furry friend is a feline, you may even consider an arch groomer that allows your cat to self-groom.

Whatever your brush of choice, use it gently, slowly and often! Brushing should be a pleasant experience for your pet, and a good bonding experience for you both. And the fact that it helps reduce your fur factory’s shedding is a definite plus!

Bath time!

Maintain your pet’s cleanliness by bathing him once or twice each month. Gently massaging the shampoo into his hair will encourage better blood circulation which, in turn, helps improve the health of his skin and hair. It probably goes without saying this remedy is not meant for cats – unless you have a rare specimen who actually likes getting wet. Cats are self-cleaners, using their barbed tongue, forepaws and teeth to keep up their personal hygiene.

Vacuum.

I know…these tips are meant to reduce your time vacuuming your floors. And this tip will, in the long run, if you use your vacuum on your pet instead! While some pets run the mere sight of that noisy monstrosity, others actually enjoy the experience of having the nozzle rub across his coat. Many manufacturers even make pet-friendly vacuum cleaner attachments – check your local pet supply store.

Maintain good health.

The absence of a healthy diet can contribute to excessive shedding in your pet, as can stress and a variety of skin conditions. If you’ve tried some of the suggestions above and remain concerned about your pet’s shedding, schedule a visit with your vet, who can test for deficiencies and possible medical conditions.

Shedding is a burden most pet parents endure. But with a little extra effort and time, it is possible to reduce the amount of hair sticking to everything but your pet. Or, you can simply adopt the adage that “pet hair is my glitter” and leave it at that!

Pet Organ Donation

Pet Organ Donation could save a life Professional Pet Sitting Etc

Pet

.

Organ

.

Donation

Author, Darlene Wagner Butler, for Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet, but knowing he can help other pets in medical need may provide some comfort. Not only can your pet’s legacy live on by providing the gift of life through research and treatment discovery, but he can also provide organs, bones and tissue to pets in need.

Pet organ donation is a relatively new concept born in a Kansas City, Kansas research company called Likarda. The company began by researching a pet diabetes treatment using cells from healthy pancreases which were donated by pet parents. Traditionally, pets are treated for diabetes in the same manner as humans, with daily insulin injections. By using the healthy pancreas cells, researchers are confident they can develop a one-time injection treatment for diabetic pets.

Grafts can treat a variety of pet disorders: bones can be mended and limbs spared from amputation; blindness can be prevented; joints can be repaired; loose teeth can be saved rather than removed. One example of a successful graft using donated pet tissue involved an Otterhound who suffered from melanoma on the white part of his eye. The tumor was successfully removed, but a gap where it had been remained. Using a graft from the eye of a dog donor, the Otterhound’s eyeball was repaired, returned to its normal appearance, and the dog’s vision remained intact.

Bone cancer, severe fractures and gunshot wounds can easily damage an animal’s leg beyond repair and removal of the affected bone will leave the limb unsupported and nonfunctional. A piece of donor bone can be used to fill the gap, giving the pet the stability and function he had before.

While humans have the benefit of becoming an organ donor simply by checking a box on their driver license, and becoming a recipient by being added to a transplant list, it’s much more complicated for our beloved furry friends. Unlike with humans, there is no infrastructure or national network in place in the event of a sudden pet death. But that could be changing. The Pet Organ Donation Network, an affiliate of research company Likarda, works to connect veterinarians, researchers and pet owners in the Kansas City, Kansas area. The organs are harvested from euthanized petss and, just like with human donors, when organs can’t be used for transplant, they are sent to research labs. While the service is currently available only in the Kansas City area, there may be a similar service in your area. Simply research “pet organ donation” online, and see what you and your pet can do to help others in need.
