NH Licensed Rescue list 2017/2018

If you will be adopting from an animal welfare organization, please make sure that you are dealing with an organization that is completely legal and licensed in the state that you are residing.  There have been many people starting animal adoptions to bring animals into a state to make money adopting out animals under the guise that they are rescued.  However, many of these organizations are not following state laws.  These state laws are there to protect the animals as well as YOU.  People who have adopted from these agencies have ended up with very sick animals and have brought many un-vaccinated animals into different states.  So be careful.

Animals coming into the state of NH must be quarantined in a licensed state facility for 48 hours before going into adopted homes.  so, if an organization wants to meet you in a parking lot, that should raise a red flag.

Also be very careful of FREE pets.  These free pets could also be harboring disease.  If an organization is offering FREE pets, be careful,  These could be pets stolen from another state and need to be released immediately for whatever reason. Really research any organization and ask lots of questions.

How can

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

When you think of pets in need, most people think of humane societies, humane shelters and rescues.  There certainly are many pets in need in those facilities and organizations.  However, adopting a pet is not the only way you can help pets in need.  There are lots of ways you can help these organizations and more.

Here is how –

ADOPT –

This is always a way to help a pet in need.  If you are ready to add a new furry love to your family, by all means adopt.  The added love in your home will be well worth it.  But there are many things you can do besides adopting.

FOSTER –

Here is a way to help many pets.  I foster orphaned kittens for a shelter.  These kittens could be orphaned and still nursing, they could be too young to vaccinate and therefore can not go into a shelter where they would be susceptible to many diseases.  If you have room and time to care for an orphan kitten or puppy, it is rewarding.  Many organizations also need help with pregnant moms (cats and dogs).  The shelter is not a place for a pregnant mom, too much going on, too stressful, etc.  They need a quiet, warm home where they can finish their pregnancy, deliver their babies and care for their babies until they are ready to be adopted.

DONATE MONEY –

Every organization can make your dollar stretch to help the animals in their care.  This is always a great way to help your local organization.

TRAIN –

If you know how to train the basics, many shelters would love to have the dogs trained in basic – sit, down, come, stay.  Dogs that are trained are always a plus to be adopted.

SOCIALIZE –

All the cats and dogs need love and attention.  Maybe you can just sit and give them attention.  The animals need it. Sitting and brushing or petting an animal not only de-stresses that animal but also de-stresses YOU.   Many shelters have socialization programs.

DONATE NEEDED ITEMS –

Paper Towels (they go through cases)

Trash bags

Kitty Litter (call the organization to find out if they use a certain kind, many organizations like to use one kind for consistency for the cats.)

Food – dog, cat, kitten, puppy, dry or canned.  This is always in need.  (Call the organization to find out if they use a certain kind, many organizations like to use one kind for consistency for the pets.)

Towels, blankets, sheets (new or used)

Newspaper

Small boxes (That cans are packed in.  They can be used as litter boxes)

Toys

Treats

Brushes and other grooming items

Stainless steel bowls

Shelving Units (heavy duty on wheels for storage)

Storage Boxes

Pet Formula

Pet Nursing Bottles

VOLUNTEER TIME –

Shelters need volunteers for many things, just ask what they need

MAKE PET ITEMS –

Pet beds

Pet toys

VOLUNTEER YOUR EXPERTISE –

Can you do bookkeeping, cpa, taxes

Landscaper, lawn mowing, snow plow

Carpenter

Plumber

Painter

Artist – paint a mural, donate your works of art for auction

SHARE POSTS  –

Like your rescue or shelter’s Facebook page.  Share posts of the animals looking for homes. You never know if one of your friends will fall in love and give an animal a much needed home.

WILDLIFE –

Become a wildlife rehabilitator in your state

Donate to a rehabber person or organization, they can always

CARE FOR A FERAL COLONY –

Many shelters do a trap-neuter-release.  Volunteers are needed to help bring food on a daily basis.  Making warm shelters is also needed.  Making sure that people do not harm them or poison them.

With Christmas right around the bend, it is time to ensure the last minute shopping gets done and that everyone on your lists has a special gift come Christmas Morning.  Now I am quite sure that you, being the loving Pet Parent you are, have a list with something for your family pet, right?  Well if not, don’t fear!  Here are a few ideas of Christmas Gift for Pets that your pet is sure to love!

Doggie Cigars!  Cute little toys for your dog that looks like real cigars!  $10.00 and can be found on www.blueribbongeneralstore.net

Catnip Fortune Cookies!  How cute these little goodies would be under your tree.  Filled with Farm Fresh Catnip, this felt toy comes with a little fortune for your kitty, tucked inside! $20.00 and can be found at http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/catnip-fortune-cookies

Maybe Fido would like a new food dish?  This darling little set up comes from what they call an upcycled wine barrel with a place for food and water!  Absolutely perfect!  $135.00 and can be found at http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/wine-barrel-dog-feeder

It may be time for your pet to get a new, warm cozy bed?  I know my dog and cat love to cozy down in a nice soft bed every night.  Why not take a look around to find one that not only fits your pet’s needs, but also blends in with your décor?  Two birds, one Stone! For a bed with great reviews, try out http://www.mammothoutlet.com/DOG-BEDS-PET-BEDS-DOG-PET.htm They’re known as “Breeder’s Number 1 Choice”.

When all else fails our pets are pretty easy to please, with a new toy, a new leash (which you actually use to walk them) even a new sweater would all be lovingly accepted by your pet!

How about a regular walk/bathroom break for your dog (no more crossing paws for them) or daily attention while we scoop the litterbox (so you don’t have to) for your cat while you are at work?  We can provide that, just sign up at Professional Pet Sitting Etc.  But……

The best gift of all: Your love and attention!  Your pet really only wants one thing and that’s you! Stop and think about how much time each day you spend exercising and loving on your dog or playing and cuddling with your cat.  An extra walk each day, a toss of the ball, more snuggles, a pat on their furry heads – that’s really all your pet wants.  So….give it to them.  They have thanked you already for it – 100 times over, right?

Have a wonderful, snuggly holiday !!

Pets as Gifts – Is it a Good Idea

Gifts

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

You have a pet lover on your gift list and thought a new pet would be the perfect gift.

Please think long and hard before giving a living breathing animal as a gift. Pets as gifts require many things to consider.

The times that many people think of giving a pet as a gift are Birthdays, Easter, Christmas and after a person has lost a beloved pet. Weeks and months after a pet is given at these times is also the times these pets may be given up. If not given up, the pets may enjoy a wonderful life but the joy of choosing one’s own pet was not given.

The one thing I have witnessed over and over again in all the years that I have been in animal welfare is when an animal chooses a person, the bond is special. If you have ever been chosen by a pet, you know what I mean.

Keep in mind –

  • Adding a pet to a family is a very personal choice.
  • Not every pet is right for every family
  • Not every family is right for every pet
  • What you may think is the perfect pet maybe the last thing the person receiving would actually get for themselves.
  • A person may prefer to add a dog instead of getting another cat or may decide to add a cat instead of another dog.
  • Maybe they prefer a male over a female or the other way around.
  • Maybe they absolutely love black but would never consider another black pet because it reminds them of the one they lost and it would be too painful.

If there was a loss of a pet, and they are grieving, many people think getting another pet to replace that pet will help.  Keep in mind, a pet that was deeply loved can never be replaced. Grieving is a very individualized thing.  Some people do well with adding a pet soon after that loss, some take much longer. It took me 5 years after losing my Siberian Husky before I was ready for another dog. If you bring a pet to a grieving person who may not be ready, you may add to that grieving if they must give up the new pet as well.

Adding a pet to a family is a decision that is a long term decision. Dogs and cats can live 15-20 years or more. Large bird breeds can live upwards of 50 years and it is advised to put them in your will and trust (all pets should be as well).

Then there is the financial aspect of owning pets. In the first year, expenses can run into $1000-2000 with pet food, vaccines, spay/neuter, etc.  If it is a pet that has medical issues that are not known when acquired, it could be higher.

A pet as a present will require a lot of time and money from the person that will be receiving the pet. Can they handle this?  Do they want to?  There is a lot to consider and if this will be a surprise, you may think you know all the answers but maybe the reason this person has not gone out to get a new pet is because it is not the right time.

So, should you throw this idea out the window?  Not necessarily.  Here are some ideas on giving the gift of a pet without actually giving a pet. This way, when the recipient is ready, all they have to do is choose.

You can make up a basket or fill a decorated box with everything they need.  Or fill a crate or pet carrier. Fill with everything on our list (lucky person and pet) or choose just a few.

Ideas For Dogs –

  • A note letting the person know that when they are ready you will be happy to take them to choose their pet
  • A note stating that you will pay for the pet of their choice
  • Pet Care Gift Certificate for mid day let out for a puppy while they are at work or dog walking for their new dog or whenever they may need a pet care visit at their home from a professional pet sitting company (Professional Pet Sitting Etc has gift certificates in any amount)
  • Pooper Scooper
  • Pet waste bags and carrier
  • Leashes, collars, harness
  • Pet Identification
  • Pet Video Camera
  • Pet GPS
  • Microchipping
  • Training Gift Certificate
  • Training/behavior books and videos
  • Pet Insurance
  • Animal Hospital Gift Certificate
  • Care Credit information (this is a special line of credit to be used for your pet whenever it is needed.  This can be used for regular or unexpected medical, emergencies, etc.  Depending on the amount, you could have up to 6 months interest free to pay off the balance. Bonus is that this can also be used for human medical and dental as well!)
  • Pet Food (enough for a few days, a week, a month)
  • Grooming Gift Certificate
  • Brushes, combs
  • Nail Clippers
  • Toys of all sorts
  • Treats
  • Beds, blankets

Ideas For Cats –

  • A note letting the person know that when they are ready you will be happy to take them to choose their pet
  • A note stating that you will pay for the pet of their choice
  • Pet Care Gift Certificate for Litter box cleaning while they are at work or whenever they may need a pet care visit at their home from a professional pet sitting company (Professional Pet Sitting Etc has gift certificates in any amount)
  • Litter Scoops
  • Litterboxes (at least two)
  • Leashes, collars, harness
  • Pet Identification
  • Pet Video Camera
  • Pet GPS
  • Microchipping
  • Training/behavior books and videos
  • Pet Insurance
  • Animal Hospital Gift Certificate
  • Care Credit information (this is a special line of credit to be used for your pet whenever it is needed. This can be used for regular or unexpected medical, emergencies, etc. Depending on the amount, you could have up to 6 months interest free to pay off the balance.  Bonus is that this can also be used for human medical and dental as well!)
  • Pet Food (enough for a few days, a week, a month)
  • Grooming Gift Certificate
  • Brushes, combs
  • Scratching posts and trees of all sizes
  • Nail Clippers
  • Toys of all sorts (especially laser and feather toys)
  • Treats
  • Beds, blankets

If you are planning on giving another type of pet such as a bird, hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, duckling, chick, etc.  Please do ALOT of research.  There are Facebook groups for all of these pets and more.  Ask questions on what they would love as a gift for complete care for the type of pet you are considering.

If your friend rents, please check and find out what is allowed.  If you are thinking of a German Shepherd puppy and the rental agreement only allows cats and dogs under 25 pounds, that will be a bit disappointing.

List of Pet Friendly Rentals

If you are thinking of a horse, pony, ducks, chickens, goats, etc. You may need to check with the city your friend lives in to make sure that their home is zoned for such animals. Also, these are animals that will need a building for them to be housed in. You may need to do further research for housing plans, costs and make sure there is room and zoning for that as well. Ducks and chickens may also be in danger of wildlife in the area, so please take that into consideration.

What are some ideas that you can give to a Pet Lover without giving an actual Pet?

If they already have pets –

  • Pet Care Gift Certificates – they can always use help with pet care if they go out to dinner and need a supper visit or a dog walk when they are gone all day(Professional Pet Sitting Etc has gift certificates in any amount)
  • Animal Hospital Gift Certificate
  • Really anything on the above two lists will work

If they do not have any pets and a new pet is not right at this time –

  • Donate to a local shelter or animal organization in the person’s name
  • Donate to a local shelter or animal organization in the person’s pet’s name

Happy Gift Giving !!
