HELP, My Pet is Sick and I Have No Money!!! Financial Aid and Help

 Financial Help,

Spay/Neuter Clinics,

and More for Pet Owners

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

The worst feeling is when you love your pet more than words can say and they become ill.  To make matters worse, there is medical help but it will cost more than you can afford.  I have been in the situation more than once but luckily, I did have resources and credit cards to take care of the high cost of helping my pets.  My heart goes out to those that are less fortunate than I.  The guilt of not being able to take care of one’s pet is a horrible experience.  I hope that anyone reading this has never been in that situation.  I wrote this to help if you are or if you know someone who is in need of help.

Heartbreaking Situation – a pet owner is unable to afford treatment and their sick or injured companion animal pays the price. If the owner is homeless, a veteran, elderly, disabled or on a fixed income, the cost of care may be too much. Perhaps they have been victimized by crime, property loss or a job layoff and are experiencing a temporary financial hardship or trauma in their life, making it too difficult to afford pet care. And some animals, brought to clinics by kind hearted people, don’t have an owner to pay for treatment. Whatever the situation, the fact remains the same: When sick or injured animals are unable to receive veterinary care, they suffer.

Here is a list of organizations that are set up to help.If you know of an organization not on this list, please contact me via email at Profpetsit@aol.com

Keep in mind, that these organizations may require certain things from you.  They may need to know why you need help, may require financial proof, etc.  Please do not take this personally, they just want to help those in need and want to be able to stretch their funds the farthest.  Each organization is independent and has their own set of rules and guidelines. Therefore you will have to investigate each one separately to determine if you qualify for assistance:

DONATIONS to any of these organizations will help them continue their great work and help many more animals.

  • Pet Food Stamps – The Pet Food Stamps program, a registered NY State 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation available throughout the United States, has been created to fill the void in the United States Food Stamp program which excludes the purchase of pet food. In these rough economic times, many pet owners are forced to abandon their beloved pet to the ASPCA, North Shore Animal League or other animal shelters due to the inability to pay for their basic food supply and care. There are over 50 million Americans who currently receive Food Stamps, many with dogs or cats, who simply cannot afford to feed their animals, and these cherished companions are dropped off at animal shelters where they will most likely be put to sleep. Many people are also forced to choose between feeding their pets or themselves. A recent New York Times article states that “animal shelters have reported a steep rise in the number of cats and dogs being surrendered as owners face unemployment, home foreclosures, evictions and other financial hardships.” As more families struggle with difficult choices like paying the rent or buying food, some have to choose between keeping their pet and putting food on the table.. Seven million pets are surrendered to shelters each year due to the inability of pet parents to pay for food, with four million of those pets put to sleep. The Pet Food Stamps program aims to eliminate the needless death of these loving pets and keep families together.

Author, Dorinne Whynott, Owner of Professional Pet Sitting Etc.

Since I have been in business since 1990 and worked, volunteered, fostered, rescued in the animal field all of my life, I have been asked numerous times if I knew of places to rent that allowed pets.  It can be extremely hard to find and for the many who were not so lucky, heart breaking to have to find a good home for their beloved pets.  I wanted to create an ongoing list of the wonderful building owners who are kind enough to offer pet loving owners the opportunity to keep their pets while they must rent a place to live.

It is these kind owners who are giving you the most valuable opportunity to keep your pets, so remember to be good responsible pet owners.  Why because these building owners are becoming less and less due to un-responsible pet owners in the past.

What is a good responsible pet owner?  Glad you asked.  Here are a few examples:

  1. Train your pets (cat, dog, etc).
    • Train Dogs to walk properly on a leash (no one wants a jumping, pulling, unruly dog as a neighbor)
    • do not let your dog bark all the time.  Train him to bark once to alert you and then quiet.  Make sure that your dog is not barking all day while you are at work.
  2. Make sure litterboxes are clean to alleviate odors and possible accidents on carpets, etc.
  3. Keep cats nails trimmed and provide scratching posts to alleviate scratching wood and walls
  4. crate destructive and anxiety pets to avoid any damage to rental
  5. Always pick up any pet waste and dispose properly
  6. Repair any damage that your pet does immediately to avoid more damage
  7. Make sure your pets are always up to date on all vaccines, parasite free and are healthy to avoid getting your neighbors pets sick
  8. Follow all animal laws in the state of NH and any rules by the landlord/association
  9. Neuters all pets.  Neutered pets not only help keep the pet population down, but are generally easier to train, get along better with other animals, usually less destructive, fight other animals less.
  10. If you have a problem with your pet, seek help and advice to alleviate the problem.
